More Nikon/Nikkor Lens Problems: 18-200mm Autofocus motor fails
Posted by: srp on Tuesday, July 08, 2008 - 08:54 AM

When we went down to Tallships Fourth of July weekend, I found that my one year old lens, an 18-200mm ED-IF AF-S DX VR Nikkor, wasn't working right. The Autofocus wasn't working correctly: the motor seemed to not be functioning at all (I eventually confirmed that it was the lens, and not the camera). Once again manual focus worked fine, so I still took a handful of pictures.

Although I bought it online at Pictureline, my local store, Abolins Photography, took care of shipping it back to Nikon. Within a couple of weeks, my lens was back and working correctly. Cheers to Abolins Photography for helping me out, I was sorry to hear today that they will be closing their doors.

Nikon/Nikkor 18-135mm Lens Back From Repair
Posted by: srp on Friday, April 06, 2007 - 11:28 AM
Gadgets

I finally got my 18-135mm zoom lens back from the folks at Abolins. Unfortunately Abolins got my lens mixed up with another similar lens that came in nearly the same time mine did. To Nikon's credit it appears they turned the repair around in about four weeks. Abolins didn't figure out that they had given my lens to someone else until my call (at eight weeks) prompted them to recheck the paperwork and serial numbers.

And I have since found that others have experienced a similar problem

The good news is it's back in my hands, and I can start using my new camera again!

Nikon D80: Problem with the 18-135mm Lens
Posted by: srp on Monday, February 05, 2007 - 01:14 PM

Although I really like the new Nikon D80 I got for Christmas, the autofucus on the lens (an 18-135mm ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor) broke on our trip to Yellowstone. I'm retty sure the autofocus motor has a broken mount or perhaps a broken gear, because I hear a squeaky and grinding sound from the lens when it tries to autofocus, many times the camera cannot find focus (flashing dot in the viewfinder), but manual focus works fine.

I took it back to the place Stephanie got it for me, Abolins Photography (locally here in Tacoma). It was under warrenty, and so back it goes to Nikon for the repair work.

I got a Nikon D80 for Christmas, my first Digital SLR camera! I'm very happy with it so far.

Palm PDA: Tungsten E

Steph and I recently purchased two Tungsten E PDAs by Palm. We both were interested in this PDA because of

  1. Color, high resolution screen
  2. Size
  3. Apparent Value
The ratio of features to price (approx $200) seemed great. We purchased them from a Office Depot store.
