Steph and Scott at Castle Miglos
Steph and Scott at Castle Miglos, September 1997

I am the Director of Scientific Computing in the Bioinformatics Program at ZymoGenetics in Seattle, WA.

Before moving to Seattle I worked at UC San Francisco with Fred Cohen as a Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher from April 1988 to April 1989, and then an Assistant Research Chemist to Oct 1993, in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard Univeristy, fulfilling my residency there, but spending two of those years at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland.

My education is in (Bio)Chemistry with a little Computer Science mixed in.

Interests:

I'm interested in some of the usual geeky stuff including Home Neworking, Home Automation including X10 devices, weather stations, and webcams, and and a little TiVo hacking. We also have a small collection of Audreys.

An example of our network and automation systems includes Caller ID display: One Audrey listens for the Caller ID information on the phone line with ACID. This in turn signals the other Audreys and the TiVo, which displays the Caller ID information onto the TV.

I enjoy the out-of-doors, including hiking, backpacking, and kayaking. Here are some pictures from adventures to Mt. Julius Caesar (~13,000ft), and an unnamed saddle in the Eastern Sierras (reached from the Tom's Place turnoff on Hwy 395 ~12,200ft). I spend some time gardening each year too.

Recently the family has been doing some Geocaching. Steph and I are known as "StephandScott". I also helped MalPal hide her first cache.

I enjoy photograpy (taking and viewing), some of my favorites are Ansel Adams and Edward Weston.
